Justin Cline, cofounder of Full Tilt Ice Cream, suffered a serious heart attack on February 5. The family shared over the weekend that Cline died early in the morning on Saturday, March 2.

Cline was 49 years old, raising his two kids, Moss and Ruby, with his wife and cofounder Ann Magyar. The business they started in 2008 has gifted Seattle with immeasurable hours of joy—he gave us ice cream parlors that also housed pinball machines and arcade games (and beer). Few places can be cool enough to host a Mudhoney performance, but also be the gold standard for where to host a child’s birthday party.

That feels like a good encapsulation of Justin, too. He was a tireless engine chugging in support of his community, especially White Center, Cline’s longtime neighborhood and the home of the original Full Tilt. His shops hang the work of local artists, shout out other local small businesses, and are quick to promote local music, local benefits, and pretty much everything that forms the fabric of the Seattle we want to live in.

I didn’t know Cline well, but he always had time to talk to me about his latest tribute flavor, his forays into burgers or popsicles, or Full Tilt’s other creative endeavors, which range from ice cream pies to freeze-dried skittles. He was also outspoken in calling out bullshit as he saw it. That quality infused his business as well; Full Tilt exudes authenticity in a world full of on-message branding and curation.
